Hieroglyphs: A Pictorial Egyptian “Alphabet”
Hieroglyphs
25 images (24 hieroglyphs and a frontispiece), app. 8"x5.5" each.
2005
Pen and Ink Wash on Bristol Board. Digitally Coloured.
Similar to my pictorial alphabet, this was a summer "vacation" project, in which I set myself the task of drawing the basic set of Egyptian hieroglyphs (those most often used for sounding out words). My attempt was to only use scenes that one might see in Egypt, and give some sense of space and history to the images where possible. I love Hieroglyphs and ancient forms of writing, and thought it would be fun to create a series of images that might help others learn at least a few of them more easily. Shown here are 4 images from the resulting series.
